Pay Rate: starting at $275/week. Meals and housing are provided to all staff.

The Adventure Specialist is the go-to staff member for adventure seekers. Want to climb rocks? Ride bikes down our rocky trails? Help children gain a sense of wonder for the natural world around them? The Adventure Specialist oversees all the adventure skill tracks that take place at camp. They are also responsible for all gear  housed at camp. 

Essential Functions

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the camp community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  • Helps train, develop programs, create schedules and directs personnel and volunteers.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance.
  • Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Organizes and distributes camp equipment for overnight trips, camp outs and activity sessions.
  • Supports camp daily, weekly and seasonally as an engaged member of planning and meeting sessions with the Camp Santa Maria support staff team.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events with the support staff team.
  • Models relationship-building skills for campers and staff.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.


  • 21 years old. 
  • One to two years related experience preferred. Experience with Outward Bound, NOLS, or another wilderness expeditionary program. 
  • Experience with gear maintenance and organization preferred.
  • Must have a valid US driving license. 
  • Completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff, Staff Training, WFA, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens. Lifeguard license is a plus.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of  the community

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with rock climbing, mountain biking
  • 1-2 years experience in leading trips with a guide company, camp or school org

Physical Demands

Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings. Camp life can be physically and emotionally challenging. You will be asked to function at 8200', in a variety of summer mountain weather ranging from snow to highs in the 90's with potential strong thunderstorms. On an average day you will walk 3-5 miles.
